Notes

• There is an oddity in the records about James S.  This name firstappears in the 1880 census, but in the same position among thechildren as the child named Tipton S in the 1870 census, and there isno Tipton in 1880.  Perhaps there is an error of transcription in the1880 census.  But it appears that this is the same child with a nameof James Tipton S.  You will notice several children of this familyhave three given names.

  The oldest child of this family was also named James, James C, bornabout 1842 or 1844!  Censuses for this family show the first child in1850 as James C, age 8.  He appears in 1860 as James, age 16.  Therewere also two Williams, William A born about 1846 and William G bornabout 1868.
