The Hamrick Data Pages report that Judith married Reuben McSwain about1865.  We find the young couple farming in 1870, with the help of ahired boy on the farm.  They have no children yet.  If the 1865 dateis right, Judith was only about 15 when they married.  In the 1870census she is called Julia.  This name Judith got entered in numerousways for every individual with that name.  Besides Julia, we find suchindividuals called Judah or Judea, with or without the final H.

There is a conflict in the record as I have understood it.  In theJune 1880 census for Reuben, his wife J M is enumerated with him.  Butthere is a record of death that also appears to be for Reuben's wifeJudith Margaret.  The age of J M in this death record, 27, matches theage in the family enumeration.

The death record reports that J M McSwain died in November 1879.  Herdeath is recorded in the mortality tables of the 1880 census for NorthCarolina, but I have not seen an actual death certificate.

The 1880 census reports one child who was born in November 1879, withthe initial E, matching the child Elijah reported by the Hamrick data. So it might be thought that Judith died in childbirth with Elijah. However, the Hamrick Data Pages report that an unnamed child of thefamily was born about 1880.  So I am uncertain how to reconcile thesereports, or what other J M McSwain the death record might refer to.But interestingly, the Hamrick data also reports that Judith MargaretMcSwain did die in 1879, despite their report that a child was bornabout 1880!  The Hamrick data includes no discussion or explanation.
