Notes

  • In the family of James and Susannah Strange, a son John is firstreported in the 1850 census, where John is 9 months old at the Octobercensus.  This seems to tell us that John was born in July 1850.  In1870 John W is reported as 17 years old, which is a bit young for whatwe expect.

The 1860 census is confusing.  There are two sons between Malinda andMurphy reported as J P and J W.  The entry for JW seems to match JohnW in 1870, and the age of John W in 1860 is 8.  However, JP isreported as age 10 in 1860, so this seems to match John, less than oneyear old in the 1850 census.  The middle initial P does match anythingelse I have found in genealogies or public records.  There could havebeen one other son born soon after the 1850 census, who died beforethe 1870 census.  The genealogies I have found on this family do notreport any child to match this.

This mystery is similar to the mystery of Amanda and Jane.  In 1850two daughters are reported Amanda age 4 and Jane age 2.  Only Amandaor Amanda J shows up after this.  Several genealogies have AmandaJane, with no other daughter to match another Jane between Amanda andMalinda.

This census reports that Jon and Polly, reported as Mary in the lastcensus, have been married 23 years.  This matches the report of theirmarriage date by a Strange genealogy as 19 Jan 1877.  This genealogyalso reports a daughter Cynthia, with no birth or death information. This appears to match a Cynthia Strange reported in Nicole Wiebe'sgenealogy of the Henderson-Henry lines, where she reports Cynthia born16 June 1899 and married to Charles Henry, with no marriage date.(See Notes for Cynthia Strange.)

That same anonymous Strange genealogy, with good detail, reports Johnw Strange as buried "somewhere at Morristown, Hamblen County,Tennessee."  I have not found further information on his burial fromother sources.
