As often seems to be the case, the 1900 census reports one yeardiffernece in the birth year for both Thomas and Mary. Thomas' knownbirth date from family sources is 20 January 1857, Mary's 20 January1857.
The census reports that Thomas and Mary were running ahotel. In hisJenkins history, Harold Christian comemnts:
"The family suffered the loss of Great Grandfather Joseph Sanford on26 May 1893.... By this point in time Joseph's brother-in-law TomChapel and Joseph's sister Lide were running a hotel in Marlow. TheMarlow Magnet, Marlow's first newspaper, contains advertisements ofChapel's Hotel in many of its 1893 issues. (Copies of issues of thispaper are on file in the library of the Oklahoma Historical Societynear the State Capitol in Oklahoma City.)"
